Job Summary

The Team
As part of Kootenay Boundary Region's Research team of scientists and technical subject matter experts, you will work closely with colleagues in region, South Area, and the province to deliver applied research and expertise.

The Role
The Research Vegetation Ecologist is a researcher and scientific advisor in the field of vegetation ecology. In this role, you conduct applied research to support science-based decision-making, and provide professional advice related to vegetation ecology and ecosystem classification. This position conducts ecosystem research, creates and maintains the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification and its applications, and communicates results to scientific and technical users. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Thesis-based M.Sc. or higher, specializing in Forest Ecology, Plant Ecology or closely related Forest Science specialty. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working with BC's Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) system, or equivalent system, both in the field and in planning/desktop applications.
  • Experience planning and directing scientific work (own and other's) to achieve research objectives.
  • Experience producing technical reports and/or publications.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience summarizing and communicating research and/or specialized scientific information orally and in writing to gain understanding of experts and non-experts.

Provisos:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent).
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, Level 1 First Aid Certification.
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, ATV Operator and Snow Machine Operator certifications.
  • Must be willing and physically able to work outdoors in remote areas and in a variety of conditions.
  • Willing and able to fly in planes and helicopters.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in either Cranbrook or Nelson.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
