Nursing Instructor - Bachelor of Science in Nursing
POSITION TYPE: Faculty - 50%, Non-Regular Type 2 (NR2)
POSITION START: May 1st, 2025

The Faculty of Health at Kwantlen Polytechnic University invites applications for one Non-Regular Type 2 part-time faculty to teach in our Bachelor of Science in Nursing: LPN - BSN Pilot program. The appointment is for the period May 1st, 2025, to April 30th, 2026. NR2 faculty engage in teaching, student support, service to the school and program, and professional development activities. NR2 faculty are entitled to paid vacation leave, professional development leave and benefits.

FACULTY OVERVIEW:

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a full-time cohort program that prepares nursing students to work with individuals, families and communities with varying health and health promotion needs across diverse settings. The BSN program utilizes a concept-based pedagogical approach based on caring and health promotion and has been developed in consultation with nursing practitioners, theorists, professional associations, and various government ministries.

Pedagogy and teaching methodologies encourage the development of critical thinking and the discovery of personal meaning. There is an emphasis on practice experiences as the foundation of nursing and the recognition that nurses' work requires thoughtful, reflective action.
Program courses and labs prepare nursing students to practice with clients in a wide variety of institutional and community settings. Upon graduation, students will be eligible to apply for registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and to write the Next Generation National Council Licensure Examination (NGN-NCLEX) in order to become a practicing Registered Nurse.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Faculty in the BSN Nursing Program are supported in teaching in all areas of the program. The NR2 position includes teaching, student support, service to the school and program and professional development activities. The focus of this position is maternity nursing.

Faculty members are accountable for 10 months of the year. This time includes teaching, student counselling, curriculum/program development, professional development, and participation in various educational committees.

Teaching duties include:
  • The development and revision of course outlines and curriculum
  • The preparation of courses, including but not limited to course presentations, online delivery platforms, and other course related activities
  • Responsibility for the delivery of courses, including lectures, seminars, laboratories, clinical supervision, simulations, field trips, and in-person, online or hybrid course delivery
  • Student assessment, testing, and placement
  • Student consultations, including office hours (1 hour per week per 3 credit course or equivalent)
  • Work integrated learning placements
  • Submission of grades in accordance with policy

Service may include:
  • Participation in program, department, faculty, and university committees and events.
  • Participation in program quality assurance activities including program review and accreditation
  • Participation in regional, national and international committees and other professional organizations

NRSG 2245 - Nursing practice 2 - Maternity - 75%
Course Description: Students will engage with clients in a variety of settings who are experiencing predictable health situations. Practice experience includes instructor-guided and supervised client care in acute care settings. Students will have opportunities to apply knowledge from nursing theory and the sciences to their clinical practice and start to develop clinical decision-making abilities. They will explore and use health team members' expertise in various contexts. Note: Students will be required to provide their own transportation to and from a variety of clinical placement agencies in the Lower Mainland.

NRSG 2275 -Maternity Theory - 25%
Course Description: Students will continue to explore and develop a repertoire of nursing applications in relation to people's experience with predictable health situations in a theoretical context. They will begin to integrate knowledge from clients' experiences, nursing theories, professional standards, science, humanities, ethics, research and relational practice to assess and plan nursing care for individuals and families experiencing birth, surgery, or medical management of acute and chronic health challenges, with predictable outcomes. Students will begin to apply higher order thinking and clinical decision making reflecting on their practice experience in order to deepen and broaden their skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care. They will integrate knowledge to both prepare for subsequent clinical learning and analyze previous clinical experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful applicant will have experience working in the maternity setting. The required academic credentials to teach in the BSN are specific to the program and are as follows:
  • Master's Degree required; with at least one degree as Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Master's Degree in Nursing. Doctorate preferred.
  • Eligible for practicing membership with BCCNM with no limits, no conditions, no terms.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience preferred.
  • Three years preferred, related work experience

SALARY INFORMATION:

Placement on the salary scale will be dependent on level of education and relevant teaching experience. Advancement up the pay scale is based on FTE and employment status.

This competition is for a maximum FTE of 50% NR2. When possible, priority will be given to the candidate(s) who can maximize the FTE either individually, or collectively, as such please indicate on your application your preferred workload percentage.
